Medical Insurance

U.S. law requires all J-1 student-visa holders to have insurance to cover the cost of medical treatment. Some institutions require all international students to purchase such insurance. Others may not require it, but in all cases it is strongly recommended, for reasons that will be made clear elsewhere in this booklet. For now, check with your college or university to determine if health insurance is mandatory.

We recommend that you obtain comprehensive health and accident insurance for yourself and your family. That insurance should be effective from the time you leave your home. Check your home-country policy to see if it covers you during your trip and in the United States. Read the documents you receive from your new college and university to learn more about obtaining the insurance you need.
