Trying out Zimbra Desktop March 12, 2010

I installed Zimbra today and found the interface to be fairly intuitive and the operation to be quite smooth. However, as nice as it is, I am not sure I can give up Outlook entirely and switch to Zimbra. Anyone out there have any thoughts on Zimbra as compared to Outlook?

Avoid “Sync in a Blink” if you have 500+ Contacts March 8, 2010

I found “Sync in a Blink” in the iTunes app store. At first glance, it seemed to be a good solution to synchronize my Exchange and Gmail contacts. However, the application did not work for me. When I attempted to synchronize all my contacts, it would crash. When I attempted to synchronize 50 contacts at a time, it held up for a while. Then somewhere around 400 contacts, it became unstable and began creating duplicates and crashing again.

So, for now, I am back to using gSyncit — which isn’t perfect either but it is the best solution I have been able to find thus far. And, since it is possible to configure gSyncit to perform a uni-directional (Outlook –> Gmail) sync, I can keep my contact data safe.

The Apple iPad is Underwhelming January 28, 2010

Like everyone else, I was looking forward to a tablet that would be as game-changing as the iPhone was. Like many, I was disappointed and underwhelmed.

I am not sure how or why they decided not to include multitasking (background applications), an HDMI port, and a camera (especially a front-facing one).

Then, there are the videos Apple makes. *sigh*

I am sure that I am not alone when I roll my eyes at hyperbolic words such as “magical,” “amazing,” “revolutionary,” and “incredible.” I’m sure everyone on the product launch team is trying to live up to Steve’s charisma but a crazed look and superlative words are not really the best way to do it.

You know what would be “magical,” “amazing,” “revolutionary,” and “incredible?” A cure for cancer. Not an oversized iPod Touch.
