Can Apple Do No Wrong? March 25, 2008
Posted by atharkhan in : Personal, Tech , add a commentI see so much good press about Apple that it makes me wonder: Can a media outlet be critical of Apple and get away with it? Does Apple cut them off from future events? How can a company do no wrong… ever!?
Before I even start writing, I feel compelled to ensure my personal safety by mentioning that I do like Apple and own several of their products including an iPhone, an iPod Shuffle, a G3 iPod, an Apple TV, a MacBook and an iMac — not to mention a couple of Airport Express routers. So clearly, I like their products.
However, it surprises me that I cannot seem to find any negative press about Apple and really, nothing is that perfect. I see this a lot on Digg — a post about the smallest development from Apple makes it to the front page within 20 minutes whereas a cure for cancer may never see Page 6. Every media outlet — be it Internet, PodCast or TV — sings high praise for Apple and never has anything bad to say. Is it simply that they are scared of being alienated by Apple and not being allowed into future Apple events?
Can anyone shed light on how Apple manages to keep a purely positive image at all times?
Plaxo 3.0 Makes Using the MacBook More Viable July 8, 2007
Posted by atharkhan in : Personal, Review, Tech , add a commentI’ll be the first to admit that I was often frustrated with the MacBook when I first got it. I was using it primarily for web browsing and iTunes and not much else. The main reason I kept it was primarily that iTunes worked better — Music sounded much better (less static/interference from other components) and supported longer (non-truncated) file names for music files.
However, I couldn’t use it as a primary system because Microsoft Outlook isn’t available on the Mac platform. And, I simply must (MUST!) have Outlook and Plaxo before I can consider making the switch. Yes, Plaxo does sync the Mac Addressbook but it isn’t exactly flawless. It seems to have trouble with timezones on the Mac and often caused duplicate entries due to categories.
The new version of Plaxo (currently in Beta) is a step in the right direction. I am now able to sync both iCal and the Mac Addressbook. I can also sync my Outlook Calendar and Addressbook with Gmail. This is allowing me to sync my phone with the MacBook instead of the ThinkPad and it seems to be working well — no duplicates and no issues with timezones. Yaay!
MacBook Heating Up! December 12, 2006
Posted by atharkhan in : Tech , add a commentI have been trying to get used to the MacBook lately but the heating issue is just overwhelming. If you’re in the market for a Mac, make sure you can live with your thighs being burnt to a crisp. Even with a “Lapinator” (which uses Thinsulate and is enough to even shield the heat from a Dell D610) I can still feel the heat and can’t place this thing in my lap. There are spacers on the “Lapinator” which allow heat to escape… and yet….
I guess I need to call the apple store and try and get some help with this. Has anyone else experienced this?
