Patent Bar Prep - Day 24 January 15, 2007

Got through Chapter 8. When I say “got through,” I mean… with a very low accuracy rate. I thought my “bright” idea of skimming the material before taking the practice questions would be sufficient. Chapter 8 taught me that it was not enough. Too passive. So, for Chapter 9, first I reviewed the materials. Then, as I went along taking the questions, I would write down the basic rule as stated in the correct answer. This seemed to help quite a bit because I did really well and it also kept me awake longer than average. Usually, about 20 questions (which translates to about an hour and a half) into it, I start drifting. Not today. I did almost 100 and with a very respectable accuracy rate. And, I ended up with about 3 pages of material which will probably be useful at some point to review — maybe the weekend I am freaking out about the exam.

The weekend was not as productive as it could have been — but I did do a few loads of laundry, expunged 3 Gb of irritating noise (that’s what I call music that has fallen out of favor with me) out of my iTunes library and obsessed about pointless stuff I have no control over. As I always say, everyone’s life can’t be this glamorous. It takes a lot of work to get here.

Now that I have put in 4 straight hours of TV Viewing time into “House,” it’s time to call it a night and ponder whether I will go to medical school or not.

Finished Chapter 6 and 7. My performance on Chapter 6 was horribly bad because it dealt primarily with procedural and not conceptual issues. So, now I have slightly changed my strategy. Before starting on a chapter, I review the lecture charts provided by the prep course and it seems to help greatly. I have made a mental note to do that the weekend before the exam. Tomorrow I will pick up with Chapter 8 and try and get as far as I can. I have to do the reading for UCC, Corporations and Wills & Trusts as well. Those three classes are turning out to be very rule intensive.

Anyway, I will now go waste some time in front of the TV. I have earned it.

Finished out Chapter 5. Some of the Obviousness questions were anything but!. I was picking questions based on hunches, gut feelings and female intuition. (Yes, I know how wrong that last one sounds.) I was getting most of them right but I couldnt really explain why. And where the answer simply pointed to a USC or MPEP section, without an explanation, it was hard to figure out the reasoning without investing another 20 minutes into the question.

As a side note, I have to say Kayton’s Examware seems really buggy. It loses it’s record of previous chapters which is going to make it hard to review only the missed questions. Oh well… with the type of schedule I have put myself on, I may not even have the time to go back and review.

Tomorrow, I will start with Chapter 6 which deals with Continuing Applications, Continued Examination and Types of Application. I guess things will start getting increasingly procedural and less substantive/conceptual. Yaay! (In case you missed it, that was bitter sarcasm).

Peace out!
