Evidence Reading September 11, 2006

Having spent a (most awesome) weekend with an old friend, I am now doing my Evidence reading at 11 PM on a Sunday Night. I am sure you’re thinking that I should never have gotten myself into this stressful situation. True. But, this is a great friend — who taught me how to cook indian food and look cool while doing it. He also attempted to teach me (and several others rythmically challenged people) how to dance bollywood-style. That project failed.

Still, I had the time in recent memory.

So, while you folks go get some rest, I will be reading for my Evidence class — cursing myself for not having managed my time better while basking in the warm fuzzy feeling you get from seeing an old friend.

Peace out!

The Cult is Calling… the Cult of Mac that is! September 5, 2006

I’m a Windows SysAdmin. I live, breathe and love Windows. I am an unabashed fan of Microsoft and don’t think Gates is evil. If anything, he is a strategic grandmaster chessplayer when it comes to business. And, he is high up on my mental pedestal (which he shares with Steve Jobs among others)

That being said, every time I walk by a mac store or even visit apple.com, I hear a million macs whispering my name. A couple people at work and someone at school suggested taking a closer look at the new Intel Macs. I nodded politely while doing a “what-ever” in my mind. But basically, thus far, I dismissed the mac as a visually slick computer that was ultimately best suited for hipster types who drift from one Starbucks to another.

Anyway, now that I am looking to buy a notebook to permanently separate my work and personal life, I have to say the macs are looking pretty darn good. They are comparable in price, run Windows natively (using BootCamp) or in a Window (using Parallel), and they will probably burn my lap just about the same. (Note to self: It’s a laptop; NOT a crotch-top. Move it away from the torso!)

Yesterday, I asked a friend for his question. Similar to Google, in 0.003 seconds, his response was “Definitely a Mac.” Now, this is someone whose technical opinion I trust so I couldn’t dismiss it lightly. An hour of arguments and rebuttals later, he asked me to come over and take a look at his MacBook Pro.

I cant even remember what happened next… here are some things I vaguely remember. The little remote control for iTunes… he INSTANT indexing/searching built into the Operating System … the Snapshot/Backup features coming in the next release of the OS. Basically, I am getting a Mac. The next (agonizing) question is WHICH one and how much to shell out for it.
Must… get… Mac. Don’t… even… have… it… yet… but… already… love … it. Must… get… Mac. Must… get… Mac. Must… get… Mac….Â
