Tongue Depressors & Ice Cream Sticks October 16, 2005
Posted by atharkhan in : Personal, Review , trackbackIf you have ever wondered what its like to stick a couple of Tongue Depressors or even Ice Cream sticks up your nose, let me tell you…. NOT FUN! :-)
I got Sinus Surgery 4 days ago. I will spare you the details but the one thing I HAVE to mention is that having two of these things on either side of the nasal septum as splints feels like someone stuck something up your nose… which is what they did anyway. Okay, so it is what it feels like. The point is that it doesnt really hurt too bad but it sure is irritating!
Now, some of the “higher end” splints have a tiny straw like passage on the sides to allow for breathing while other “Wal-Mart” types do not. I am not sure which kind I have. I will find out tomorrow when they yank them out.
I really shouldnt complain about this procedure at all. This whole thing was a joke compared to the kind of pain I was expecting. Sure, there was a lot of pain (and nausea) but it really wasnt even close to what I expected. And, I had a good friend around to pamper me so it was even easier to get through it. All in all, it hasnt been too bad so far. But then again, its only day 4. There are plenty of days left to go before everything is normal again.

Sure no problem. There were several issues: Runny nose every day, repeated sinus infections, sinus headaches, trouble breathing (and therefore, trouble with physical activity), and bad sleep efficiency (due to bad breathing).
The surgery was performed in October 2005. I have never had a sinus infection since. There are some side effects. Due to the opening up of the sinuses, sometimes my nose gets too dry (the turbinates were cauterized a little too), sometimes the dry air makes the throat sore. But the fact that I have not been “down” with a sinus infection is good.
Another thing: I dont know if the surgeon could have been more agressive or if the septum is getting bent again but I am beginning to see the right side of the nose (which was the issue before) getting congested again. So, I take a nasal spray (which works a lot like Afrin) every morning. It keeps the nose opened up and lets me breathe. I like the spray better than a pill like zyrtec (which worked well too) because this way, the medicine is local. Zyrtec used to make me feel slow sometimes which hurt my exam performance a couple of times.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask. Hope your wife feels better!

Could you leave some detail of the original problem that led to surgery please (if not too personal). My wife suffers from repeated infections in the sinuses and I am curious as to whether such a procedure might be of benefit?

Man… I really wish I knew who “Anonymous” was.
Speaking of my singing career, I don’t think I will give that up unless some complete bastard records my singing from outside the bathroom and emails it to all my friends & co-workers.
As for nasal tones, I dont know just yet if they will be gone. Stay tuned :-)
Did you get a septoplasty done? If so do they have to put you completely under, Plus who was your surgeon? I am considering having it done.

Thanks
Glad you finally got it done! Recover well and breathe easy! :-)
P.S: I hope this doesnt mean a revival of your singing career - the nasal tones will be missed.
