A friend of mine who works at Dow Jones sent me the following excerpt from someone trying to log into their website:

“I even tried holding down the cntrl key when I entered my username and password because I believe that bypasses any firewall if there is one.”

All I have to say is WOW!

WinXP Laptop Running Slow? June 10, 2005

Someone asked about what tweaks to make to their laptop. I wrote out the following email. I am posting it here in case it helps you out too.

1. HARDWARE

HARD DRIVE: Swap the 5400 RPM drive with a 7200 RPM drive. You may think that it is not a big deal but there is a siginificant difference in seek time. I think they all come with the same drive buffer size but if you can get something bigger, go for it. This alone should make a major difference. When I switched, my PC became much faster.

HEAT DISSIPATION: As chips heats up, the performance deteriorates because they require more error correction or parity checking. You can use a utility to control the fan but I would recommend against it. Its one more software on the system. See if you can use the BIOS or Win XP settings. You can also use a simple Laptop Stand to lift the thing an inch off the table.

PERIPHERALS: If you see any peripherals that are not required, remove them.Windows works on a Polling system where it goes around like a monkey asking… What was that Mouse? Did you say something Keyboard? Taking something off that loop makes it easier for the monkey.

2. SOFTWARE

THINK UGLY: Turn off all visual enhancements except for ClearType font smoothing. That’s the only one worth the RAM/CPU premium. Also, go to 16 Bit Color. I havent been able to tell the difference b/w 16, 24 and 32 Bit color on a 21 Inch Monitor. And, if you do the math, the amount of data is (literally) exponentially greater. Again, don’t over-work the monkey :-)

REGISTRY: Try the good old RegClean. Windows ships with a ton of extra entries. By the time you install and remove software, more stuff builds up. It should also help a little.

UNWANTED/UNUSED SOFTWARE: Pretty much any os-tweaker will tell you to run the system bare so I will leave it at that.

Caffiene & Red Bull June 10, 2005

Man…. its hard to fall asleep when you have tons of coffee and Red Bull in you. Right now, I am too sleepy to do any reading and too awake to fall asleep. I could probably keep surfing the Internet and not really read anything in particular or I could lay in bed and try and sleep. Guess I will try and do the latter.
